Albertsons' roots in Texas can be traced back to 1969 when they entered the state in partnership with Skaggs Drug Centers to create the first combination drug/grocery stores known as Skaggs Albertsons. The first South Texas location opened in Corpus Christi 1973 followed by three San Antonio locations opening later in the decade. The partnership did well at first but in 1977, it was announced that it would end due to the fact that it was getting more difficult to control and nether partner could buy themselves out. This resulted in the formation of Southco, the company's southern division which assumed ownership of 30 of the 58 stores formally run by the partnership. The company would open it's first "Albertsons" branded store in Texas later that year in Victoria.

Some of the chains that Albertsons would compete with in South Texas were HEB, Handy Andy, and Kroger, the later of whom had just entered the San Antonio market in 1980. It was around this time that HEB started a "price war" to keep their prices much cheaper than the competition in order to establish their dominance as the number one grocer in the area. As a result of this, Handy Andy would go bankrupt in 1981 and close most of their stores in the area while Kroger would exit the South Texas market in 1993 but Albertsons still continued to do well against HEB's dominance in the area. In 1988, Albertsons expanded it's presence in the Austin area by buying six stores from Tom Thumb and converted them to Albertsons.

In the 90s, Albertsons would expand it's presence in San Antonio as well as adding stores in the Rio Grande Valley, the Hill Country, and Central Texas. They also signed a deal with IBC Bank in 1996 to have bank branches in all of their stores. Even with the expansion, it was still hard for them to keep up with HEB's growth. Following the American Stores purchase in 1999 which had cost the company millions of debt along with their shrinking market share, it was announced in March 2002 that Albertsons would pull out of San Antonio. Nine of stores in the South Texas area would be sold to HEB, while the Austin stores along with Kerrville and New Braunfels were spared from the closures and moved to other divisions. Unfortunately, half of the Austin stores were closed in 2006 with the other half sold to HEB in 2007. In 2011, the Kerrville and New Braunfels stores would be sold to HEB bringing the San Antonio division to an end.
